Phase 01 – Briefing and preparation · Building information

Organisation's information strategy

Asset Information Management · ISO 19650 · BIM management

We set up how your organisation works with information about its buildings. Why is this particular data being collected? What information value does it have? Which tools does it live in?

We start by assessing what you have, how you obtain it and what you actually use. The result is a strategy and rules with which every further project – a new building, a refurbishment or a survey of a building in operation – starts with a clear brief, not improvisation.

When to address this

  • You manage a portfolio of buildings or projects and each runs its own way. Nobody can say why this particular data is collected and who uses it. You cannot prove who approved what and when.
  • You want to “introduce BIM” and don’t know what that actually means for your organisation, or you are looking for a BIM manager.
  • You are introducing a common data environment (CDE) or changing tools.

Deliverables

  • Organisation’s information strategy – a catalogue of purposes of use built on the decisions your company actually makes, and from it the derived organisational information requirements (OIR) and asset information requirements (AIR) following the principles of ISO 19650: usable inputs, not a formality
  • Internal standard for managing building information – naming conventions for information containers, the structure of the information model, a matrix of roles and access rights, process diagrams, statuses, revisions and approval workflows
  • A brief for selecting or configuring tools – not one piece of software but a set of tools that must work together, including the ones you already have; includes an assessment of what you have and setting up their interoperability (transaction protocols, APIs)
  • Step-by-step implementation plan – including what can be postponed; better little but useful than much and non-functional

Scope can be narrowed

You don’t have to start with the whole strategy. Common entry briefs are the selection and configuration of a common data environment as the organisation’s toolset, or standalone preparation of OIR/AIR.
